Jordan launched the $2.5 billion Aqaba railway project to expand the nation's transport infrastructure. This major investment reflects a strategic commitment to national logistical capabilities. Officials awarded an initial $10 million contract to begin construction on the project, which covers necessary access roads, tunnels, and bridges. This funding initiates the development phase of the rail network. The project aims to improve logistical connectivity between key industrial sites and the port city. The scope of this infrastructure initiative is designed to integrate the southern industrial hubs more effectively with international shipping routes.

Project Scope and Timeline

Main construction for the railway is expected to begin in early 2027. Officials anticipate that the development phase will last approximately five years. This timeline accounts for the complex engineering requirements involved in constructing the transit corridor through the regional landscape.

The railway will span 403 kilometers in total length. This route includes a 43-kilometer link connecting Shidiya and Ma'an. The strategic placement of this link is intended to streamline the movement of essential industrial materials toward the coast.

The Jordan-UAE Railway Company was established on 15 April 2026 to oversee the project. Operations for this entity are focused on managing the infrastructure expansion across the designated rail network. The company serves as the primary governing body responsible for the execution of the project’s construction and long-term maintenance standards. By centralizing oversight, the Jordan-UAE Railway Company aims to ensure that the development remains aligned with its technical specifications and budgetary requirements throughout the multi-year construction window.

Economic Impact and Capacity

Engineers designed the rail line to transport 13 million tons of phosphate and 3 million tons of potash annually. These commodities represent a combined yearly capacity of 16 million tons moved across the network. The rail system is specifically engineered to handle the high volume of heavy minerals extracted from the nation's primary industrial zones.

The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company and the Arab Potash Company are expected to realize significant logistical savings through this infrastructure. Projections indicate that the railway project will reduce phosphate and potash transport costs by approximately $40 million per year. These figures reflect the anticipated efficiency gains for the industrial sector once the network reaches full operational capacity. By shifting from current transport methods to a dedicated rail line, these companies anticipate a more streamlined supply chain that minimizes the overhead associated with moving bulk commodities to the port.

Job Creation in Jordan

Economic development plans for the rail network include significant labor force expansion in the southern regions of the country. Official projections indicate that the Aqaba railway project is expected to create approximately 5,000 jobs in southern Jordan. These employment opportunities will arise across the various stages of the development and operational phases of the transit infrastructure. The project seeks to leverage local labor to support the construction of the rail line, the building of tunnels, and the maintenance of the newly established access roads. As the project transitions from the initial development phase into full operational status, these roles are expected to provide sustained employment within the southern provinces, contributing to the regional economic landscape.
