Low-cost airlines are set to resume flights to Jordan starting July 1, a move anticipated to bolster the nation's tourism recovery efforts. The resumption of these services comes after a period of suspension, marking a significant step towards revitalizing the travel sector in the Middle East state. The decision is expected to increase accessibility for tourists from various European origins, contributing to the broader economic rebound. Jordan's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has been actively working to attract international visitors, and the return of budget carriers is considered a key component of this strategy. The renewed air links aim to support local businesses and enhance the overall travel experience for international visitors, providing a key boost to the country's economy.

Tourism Sector Stabilizes

The return of budget carriers follows a period of flight suspensions linked to geopolitical tensions across the Middle East. These tensions had previously led to a downturn in international travel to the region, impacting Jordan's tourism sector. The resumption of flights marks a significant step towards stabilizing the industry, which is a key component of the nation's economy. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has been actively engaged in strategies to mitigate the effects of these disruptions and attract visitors back to the country. Re-establishing these low-cost routes is seen as a key element in rebuilding confidence among international travelers and tour operators. This development aims to restore visitor numbers and support local businesses dependent on tourism, from hotels and restaurants to local artisans and tour guides. The anticipated increase in tourist arrivals is expected to generate additional revenue and create employment opportunities across the hospitality sector.

Visitor Numbers and Revenue

Tourist attractions across Jordan recorded 632,048 visits between the start of 2026 and April 25. Non-Arab tourists constituted the majority of these visits, accounting for 63%, while Jordanians made up 33% of the total. Non-Jordanian Arab visitors represented the remaining 4% of visits during this period. These figures highlight the diverse appeal of Jordan's cultural and historical sites to a global audience.

Despite these visitation figures, tourism income experienced a decline, falling by 3.8% year-on-year (YOY) in the first quarter to $1.65 billion, compared with $1.72 billion generated during the same period in 2025. This decrease reflects the challenges faced by the sector earlier in the year. March saw a further decrease in revenue, with a 5.4% decline to $410 million. Spending from most visitor groups decreased significantly in March, falling by 20.3%. This substantial drop in spending from key tourist demographics showed the impact of regional instability on travel patterns and consumer confidence. However, tourism income from non-Jordanian Arab visitors showed an increase of 12.1% during March, indicating a resilient segment within the market. This specific growth area provides a point of optimism amidst the broader decline.

Spending by Jordanians and residents traveling abroad also decreased, falling by 6.3% during the first quarter to $459.7 million. This reduction in outbound travel spending contributed to the overall financial landscape of the tourism sector. As a result, the net tourism income for the first quarter stood at $1.19 billion, marking a 2.8% YOY decrease. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities aims to reverse these trends with the renewed accessibility provided by low-cost carriers.

Government Support Efforts

Jordan has intensified its efforts to bolster the tourism sector's recovery, according to official statements. The government has increased its presence at border crossings and other key entry points into the country. This initiative involves cooperation with relevant authorities to streamline entry processes and enhance the visitor experience. The enhanced presence is part of a broader strategy to support the resumption of low-cost flights and encourage international tourism. Authorities aim to ensure efficient operations and a welcoming environment for travelers arriving in Jordan, facilitating smoother transitions for tourists and reducing potential delays. These measures are designed to instill confidence in international visitors and tour operators, signaling Jordan's commitment to a strong and accessible tourism industry.

Outlook for Recovery

The tourism sector has reportedly begun to stabilize following disruptions experienced during February and March. These disruptions were linked to an escalation in regional tensions, specifically after the Israeli-Iranian air war. This stabilization marks a positive shift for Jordan's tourism industry, which had faced challenges due to the geopolitical climate. The recovery is aligned with broader efforts to restore visitor confidence and activity in the country. The resumption of low-cost flights is expected to play a key role in accelerating this recovery, making Jordan a more attractive and affordable destination for international travelers. The government's proactive measures, coupled with the return of budget airlines, are anticipated to drive a significant rebound in tourist arrivals and revenue in the coming months.
