King Abdullah II traveled to Karak on 25 October to address the aftermath of an attack targeting St. George's Church in Hamoud village. Security officials confirmed the visit followed the violent incident at the site of worship. During his appearance in the city, the monarch addressed the local response to extremist actors operating within the country. Regarding those responsible for the violence, King Abdullah II stated, "We will show them." Authorities in Karak continue to manage the investigation into the security breach as the government reaffirms its stance against threats to public safety.

Historical Context of Attacks

Amman experienced a significant security breach on 9 November 2005, when bombings targeted three hotels in the city. These attacks resulted in approximately 60 deaths and caused hundreds of injuries. The incident remains a notable point in the national security record of Jordan.

Separately, the pilot Muath Al-Kasasbeh was captured by ISIS in December 2014. Following his detention, the group killed him in February 2015. His death drew widespread public attention to the risks posed by extremist groups operating against the state. These two events represent past security challenges that shaped the operational environment for current national defense efforts.

Security Challenges During 2016

Jordanian security forces encountered a series of security escalations throughout 2016. In March 2016, security personnel killed seven members of an armed cell during an operation in Irbid.

Violence continued in June 2016 when an attack targeted an office of the General Intelligence Department in Baqa'a. That same month, a vehicle laden with explosives struck a Jordanian military position near the Rukban border area.

The year concluded with armed attacks and security clashes in Karak during December 2016. These events resulted in the deaths of security personnel and civilians, including one Canadian tourist. Authorities managed the response to these incidents as part of the broader effort to address extremist threats within the country.

Ongoing Counter-Terrorism Efforts

Security forces responded to an explosive device that targeted a patrol in the town of Fuheis in August 2018. The blast resulted in casualties among security personnel. Following the incident, authorities conducted a subsequent raid on an armed cell located in Salt. This operation aimed to neutralize the group responsible for the attack. Security operations concluded after the security forces engaged with the cell members during the raid. These events in Fuheis and Salt represent the operational actions taken by the state to mitigate security threats during that period.
